These aren’t just playlists. They’re more like soundtracks, with each song mapping in chronological order to key scenes.

Shuffle if you like, but only if you must.

Anna’s Shelf: 1991-1995

Bennett’s Playlist: 1995-2012

Anna’s Shelf: 1991-1995

Bennett’s Playlist: 1995-2012

More Playlists

When I created the playlists above, I was a purist about two things:

(1) Keeping Anna’s limited to songs that were relevant and popular in 1995

(2) Mapping the songs to the events in the books, so they play like a soundtrack.

Throughout the process of writing these two books, I’ve also collected songs that don’t conform to either of those rules. Songs that have perfect lyrics or set the right mood for a particular scene. Songs tell a story about first love, or missing someone far away, or having to make big choices. Those songs are here on “Anna Timeless” and “Bennett’s Garage Mix.”

These aren’t in any particular order — shuffle away. And if you’re on Spotify, these are collaborative playlists, so you can add your own favorite Anna & Bennett songs!

Anna Timeless

Beautiful, fun, and occasionally angst-y songs that aren’t limited to the early and mid-90s. As long as the lyrics are relevant, anything goes.

Bennett’s Garage Mix

Current stuff mixed with some mid-90’s sounds. If you’ve read Time After Time, you know about Bennett’s garage. Even time travelers need a place to hide away from the world and listen to music for a while.

Spotify users: You can subscribe to all of Anna & Bennett’s music HERE.

  1. As a child of the 90’s as well as a modern day music lover, it’s impossible for me to choose between those two! High school Jess would have rocked Anna’s playlist SO HARD (Anna Begins was my high school anthem!), but Jess of Today has Catch and Release on repeat…and we all know what a big Incubus fan I am.

I have to say that I love them both equally.

  2. I am a fan of Bennett’s List. But love some of the songs on Anna’s list 🙂
I will have to think about some to add, nothing strikes me immediately.

  3. I’m a late 90s child, and I think Bennett’s is more of my thing 🙂 Loooooove Back Against The Wall!

  4. Anna’s is my favorite. As soon as I saw Walk on the Ocean, I just had to pick her list. 🙂

As for a suggestion, maybe a song from Better Than Ezra?

  5. Can I say both? Because Anna and Bennett have picked a lot of my favorite songs, but I guess if I had to choose it’d be… Anna’s.

  6. Both are pretty great, but I have to say Bennett’s – most of those songs are brilliant and hold a lot of great memories for me, too. Iris and The Scientist clinched it.

  7. I would have to say Bennett’s, because I grew up with those songs more than I did the ones on Anna’s playlist. Also because I can’t listen to The Scientist without smiling. 🙂 But I love them both!

  8. Anna Begins! Walking After You! Fade Into You! Oh, my high school/college heart beats only for you. Lovelovelove.

  9. They are both great playlists, but I’d have to go with Bennett’s.

The Temper Trap’s Love Lost, Two Door Cinema Club’s What You Know, Muse’s Time Is Running Out are songs that pop into my head that might fit.

  10. Ah, can I pick both?! They’re both awesome… If I have to pick, I think Bennett’s. I’ll probably change my mind in 5 min :).

  11. These songs are mostly from my high school days, so they’re making me quite nostalgic! I’m a country music lover now, though, so I think I’d like to introduce Anna and Bennett to some classic Tim McGraw.

  12. Sorry Anna, but I’m going to have to go with Bennet’s playlist! The best song ever from this time period is ‘Only the Strong Survive’ by McFly.

  13. I’ll go with BENNETT’S PLAYLIST I don’t really listen to rock unless I’m in the mood (barely happens) or if the lyrics are good.. paramore fan here! haha 🙂 and I would recommend them to listen to ‘Lego House’ by Ed Sheeran (warning: it’s not rock btw) 😉

  14. As I was born in 1993, I am more acquainted with Bennett’s playlist, but I do like some of Anna’s songs on her playlist, like She by Green Day. I love that they liked “The Scientist” by Coldplay & “Last Night on Earth” by Green Day & “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls too!

hmmm…..a song from the present they would like….

Got it! —>” Love Interrupted” by Jack White. It’s dark yet odly sweet & 100% rock-ish. lol =)

  15. “Anna Begins” is my all time favorite song and it makes sense that it is on Anna’s list.

Here is my humble attempt at a playlist for Anna and Bennett. I think that they would like it…..
-“Feels like home” is a great one, that has been recorded by a bunch of folks, but has great meaning.
-“Just Wait” by Blues Traveler, haunting song.
-“Everything Around Me” by 16 frames.
    -“Until you” by Dave Barnes.
-“The one who knows” by Dar Willimas (supposed to be about a kid, but if you apply it to lovers in this case, it works!).
-“Back to Her” by Five Way Friday.
-“Let me Go” by Three Doors Down.
    – “Already In” by Jon McLaughlin.
-“Love Don’t Run” by Steve Holy.
-“I and Love and You” by The Avett Brothers.
-“Erase and Rewind” by Phillip LaRue.
-“Somewhere only we know” by Keane. And, finally,
-“Time” by Hootie and the Blowfish.

  16. Anna’s Shelf

  17. I like both, but I guess Anna’s? They both have pretty similar music tastes to me! WOOHOO!

Since they like similar artists, they need some GUSTER all up in that playlist. Pretty much any song from their first 4 albums is perfect, but I’ll offer up What You Wish For:

  78. I love these playlists! They’re full of songs I used to listen when I was Anna’s age, even though I wasn’t a teenager in the 90s but in the 00’s. I can’t wait for Time after Time.

  79. Both of these playlists look amazing, but I have to say, Bennett’s looks the best to me.
